Rockhampton Regional Council has been named a 2021 Gray Nomad Awards finalist.
The rewards program shines a light on regional Australia, while providing mature and long-trip travelers with verified information to help them make their vacation decisions.
Advance Rockhampton nominated the Explore Rockhampton Self-Guided Audio Tours app for Best Gray Nomad Trail 2021 and was named a finalist after proving to tourism officials that it provides an exceptional experience for visitors over 50 .
Rockhampton Area Mayor Tony Williams said being named an awards finalist solidifies the Rockhampton area as one of Australia’s leading holiday destinations for the driving market.
“Rockhampton is a popular holiday destination among nomads, particularly around mid-year when the area sees an influx of caravans escaping from the winter months to the south,” Mayor Williams said.
“Launched in 2021, the free Explore Rockhampton app currently offers seven tours that allow visitors to explore the area at their own pace.
“The app promotes more immersive ways to explore the Rockhampton area, on foot, while learning about our border town, bustling river port and gold rush town.”
Advance Rockhampton executive director Greg Bowden said recognition of the award will help boost Rockhampton’s tourism profile as interstate travel opens up as the 2022 nomadic season approaches.
“This award recognition comes at a good time as the team at Advance Rockhampton looks to launch its 2022 nomads campaign, putting Rocky on the radar as a winter vacation destination for nomads residing in southern states. of Australia,” Mr Bowden said.
“Being named a 2021 Gray Nomads Award finalist builds on the great work the team is doing to drive visitation, and we hope to see the recognition extend to increased visitor numbers and spending across our region. over the next few months.”
Gray Nomads awards director Kim Morgan said the awards program shines a spotlight on regional Australia by recognizing organizations and destinations that cater to mature visitors in an exemplary way.
“The awards promote a better lifestyle for the over 50s by providing verified information that will guide their decisions on where to travel safely in 2022, where to stay and what to live,” Ms Morgan said.
“This means that we particularly want to acknowledge the tremendous commitment shown by the Rockhampton Regional Council and the other finalists.

The winners in all 11 categories of the 2021 Gray Nomads Awards will be announced on Friday, March 4, 2022 during an online celebration.
