A project to attract remote workers to Costa Rica has passed both debates in the Legislative Assembly and will soon become law.

The bill, which is supported by the Tourism Board (TIC) and various other sectors, has yet to be signed by the president and published in La Gaceta. It may then take several weeks for the authorities to determine the specific legal processes regarding the new visa.

The law will grant one-year visas to Costa Rica for skilled remote workers, often referred to as “digital nomads”.

Teleworkers can obtain a one-year residence permit in Costa Rica, extendable for an additional year. They will also have the option to open local bank accounts and be able to drive in Costa Rica using their country’s license, among other benefits.

“In the current situation, where the recovery in tourism could extend up to three years before returning to pre-pandemic demand, the digital nomad segment is the key to the sector’s rebound,” the minister said. of Tourism Gustavo Segura.

Costa Rica is an “ideal destination” for digital nomads, according to ICT, due to its high internet connectivity coupled with warm weather and outdoor adventures like surfing and hiking.

“Tourists who stay longer redistribute their money through tourism-generated value chains,” Segura said.

“They do more local shopping, rent a car for several weeks or months, use services like beauty salon, supermarket, restaurant, soda, laundry, greengrocer, medical services, among others. community businesses, hence the importance of becoming an option for remote workers.

Currently, “digital nomads” enter Costa Rica as tourists and must therefore leave the country within 90 days.

Costa Rica digital nomad visa requirements

As indicated by the final text of the bill, the conditions to qualify for the digital nomad visa offered by Costa Rica are as follows:

  1. Proof of a stable monthly salary, a fixed income or an average monthly income, during the last year, for an amount equal to or greater than $ 3,000. If the applicant chooses to apply for benefits also for his family group, the income can be combined with a spouse or one of the other family members and must in this case reach the sum of $ 4,000. In both cases, it must be income that can continue to be collected even if the person is not in their country of origin.
  2. Obtain a medical insurance policy that covers the applicant throughout their stay in Costa Rica. The General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners will determine the conditions or minimum coverage that this policy must have.
  3. Make a one-time payment for the granting of a non-resident visa, as a worker or remote service provider. The amount remains to be determined.
  4. Any other requirement arising from the General Law on Migration and
    Immigration Law No. 8764.
