As various countries now seek to attract digital nomads, Croatia has expanded its short-stay permits to include travelers from outside the European Union.
Applicants must work remotely for a company that is not registered in Croatia and that does not perform work or provide services to employers there. Temporary stays are granted for up to one year and close family members can join them. Applicants from countries whose citizens are required to hold a visa to enter Croatia must submit their application abroad to one of the diplomatic missions or consular posts of the country. Those who are not required to hold a visa can apply to a diplomatic mission, consular post, police administration or police station corresponding to their temporary residence address.
They must not have a criminal record and are required to attach a copy of a valid travel document, proof of health insurance and an employment contract or any other document proving their working conditions. They must also provide proof of their means of subsistence during their stay, and present a bank statement or proof of regular income in their account in which they must have a minimum of 28,800 HRK (3,802 €) for a period of 12 months.
For those who opt for the short-term residence permit, Croatia’s coastline is undoubtedly its main draw with more than 1,000 islands located along its eastern coast. It also has sandy and pebble beaches, historic buildings, and fortresses to explore. It has a rich cultural heritage with excellent museums, and outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the Dinaric Range, which offers craggy peaks, caves, river canyons, waterfalls and lakes. There are many hiking and biking trails inland and adventurers can try their hand at rock climbing, rafting and ziplining.
