If you are considering…

A beach vacation in the United States

Save: Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach, of course, isn’t just a “beach” – it’s a vacation mecca. The area, which essentially stretches 60 miles along the South Carolina coast (known as the Grand Strand), includes 14 different communities. So there’s the beach, yes, but also golf, outlet shopping, walking the boardwalk, and visiting two beautiful state parks, among other amusements. It gets crowded in the summer, but you can still find great deals, especially in the shoulder season.

Where to stay: Lined with condos, Myrtle Beach offers value vacations through discounted timeshare rentals that start at around $50 a night through the Redweek service, a marketplace that timeshare owners use to sell their weekly stays. For around $100 a night, you could get a two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo at the Ocean Enclave by Hilton Grand Vacations, which has two pools and an on-site restaurant for when you don’t want to cook. There are also plenty of big chain hotels that are not too expensive (depending on the time of year).

Recreational activity : Ditch the crowds at Vereen Memorial Historical Gardens in Little River, just north of Myrtle Beach, to explore the salt marsh and spot shorebirds (free).

Catering advice: Make a pilgrimage to Little Pigs Bar-BQ, which has been serving ribs and pulled pork sandwiches since 1963.
