Following global trends, the digital nomad visa was introduced in Greece under Law 4825/2021, in September 2021. Digital nomads, ie third country nationals who work as freelancers , self-employed workers, entrepreneurs or employees working remotely from Greece exclusively with employers and clients outside Greece now have the option of applying for a visa and / or residence permit.
A digital nomad visa does not allow access to paid employment or commercial activity in Greece.
The procedure for obtaining a digital nomad visa is simplified. The request is submitted by the person concerned to the Greek consular authority of the place of his principal residence, either in person or by email or registered mail before traveling to Greece and must be answered within 10 days of the request. submission. To be eligible for a digital nomad visa, the applicant must present supporting documents proving, among other things, that he is not employed or engaged in a commercial activity in Greece and that he has adequate financial resources (at least 3,500 euros per month, which can be proved either by the employment / work contract or by proof of funds in his bank account) to cover his living expenses while residing in Greece. Family members of the applicant may also be granted, upon request, an individual visa and / or residence which expires at the same time as the digital nomad visa. In this case, the required “sufficient vital resources” are increased – by 20% for the spouse and by 15% for each child. Family members are also not allowed to exercise any economic activity in Greece.
The digital nomad visa can be valid for up to 12 months. After this period and before its expiry, the third-country national may apply for the granting of a two-year residence permit (with the possibility of renewal for two additional years), provided that the eligibility criteria continue to apply. apply.
In the event that third country nationals (as well as their family members), who meet the eligibility criteria for the digital nomad visa, have already entered Greece with a uniform visa type or under an exemption regime visa, they can apply directly for the abovementioned residence permit during the validity period of their existing visa at the one-stop-shop of the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum. In this case, they will also be required to present documents proving their residence address in Greece (a rental contract or a real estate purchase contract).
