Italy is trying to become more friendly with extra-EU remote workers.

In fact, a recent decree-law (called “Sostegni-ter”) contains many novelties in the regulatory field, including the introduction of the role of the “digital nomad” in the Italian legal system.

Considering how quickly the way of working has changed in recent years, the Italian legislator has recently adopted many provisions to introduce special regimes, related to immigration and tax issues.

The aim is to attract foreigners and encourage them not only to holiday in Italy but also to live and work from Italy.

In fact, the hope is that the new digital nomad visa will be a much easier route to a new life in Italy than the visa options currently available given that, as things stand, an extra-EU will not can currently spend a maximum of 90 days in Italy without a visa.

To do this, it is planned to introduce the new visa for those who carry out “highly qualified work activities” through the use of technological tools that allow them to work remotely, independently or for a company that does not not reside in the territory of the Italian State.

For these remote workers, in case they carry out their activity in Italy, the work permit will not be required and the residence permit, after obtaining the entry visa, will be issued for a period not exceeding one year, only if the holder ensures that he has health insurance, covering all risks in the national territory, and that he complies with the tax and social security provisions in force in Italy.

Now, the Italian government must work quickly on a new decree to define the procedures and conditions for issuing the permit, including the indication of the categories of “highly qualified workers” who can benefit from the permit.

In addition, the new decree will have to establish the minimum income ceilings of the applicant and the procedures for verifying the way in which the work is carried out.
