The Chulabhorn Royal Academy has announced that it will purchase 8 million doses of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine, to be administered as a booster in 2022. The ARC is one of the 5 agencies authorized to procure alternative Covid-19 vaccines and has already purchased supplies of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine. According to the CRA, Moderna will be delivered in stages, between the first and third quarters of next year.
The announcement follows the announcement of the Thai Red Cross also purchases 2 million doses of Moderna through the Government Pharmaceutical Organization. The doses will be administered free of charge to specific target groups, while 5 million doses purchased by private hospitals through the GPO will be administered for a fee in the last quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2022.
According to a Thai report from PBS World, CRA’s Dr Nithi Mahanonda says that in Phase 3 clinical trials, the vaccine has been shown to be over 94% effective, with serious side effects being very rare. Out of 1 million doses administered, 2.5 patients experienced serious side effects. The vaccine has also been shown to enhance immunity against beta, gamma, and delta variants.
