Alphabet launches Google TV Streamer and new Pixel phones

In a world crowded with smartphones and video streaming services and devices, do consumers still need more?

Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) clearly thinks the answer is yes as it is launching a new streamer and a new version of its Chromecast dongle. These offerings, along with the latest versions of Alphabet’s Pixel line of smartphones, were unveiled at Google’s launch party on Wednesday.

The phones are the Pixel 4a 5G and 5, two 5G compatible handsets which, like their ancestors, use the Android operating system developed by Google. The first is essentially an upgrade from the existing 4a, adding that 5G capability and featuring a slightly larger screen. The latter has a set of practical and hardware features, including wireless charging and a metal body (as opposed to the plastic of the Pixel 4a 5G).

The Pixel 4a 5G starts at $ 499, while the Pixel 5 costs at least $ 699.

In the field of streaming video, Google TV is a platform that connects content from a multitude of external providers, recalling Rokuthe neutral interface vis-à-vis the supplier. Of course, Google TV is very close to Alphabet’s YouTube TV, which broadcasts live programming; Google TV users can quickly and directly access the channel guide for this service from the top menu.

Finally, Alphabet / Google’s latest video-viewing gadget, the Chromecast with Google TV, is a plug-and-play device that plugs directly into a USB port on a TV. It also comes with a dedicated remote, unlike previous Chromecast’s which required a smartphone or even a PC as a navigation tool. As the name of the device suggests, its native streaming platform is Google TV.

Chromecast with Google TV, in the tradition of this product line, is inexpensive, starting at $ 49.99.
